What is WATER CHEMISTRY ?- Water is the most important substance in our daily life where it makes up the larger part of an organism's body especially to human and animals.
- Water is composed of oxygen and hydrogen. The particle of water are contain of oxygen during breathing process. One particle of water is called a molecule. Then, when the molecules of water form together, we can see the water and drink it. |
What is properties of WATER ?1. Polar molecule:
- Oxygen is more electronegative, the region around the oxygen has a partial negative charge. - The region around the two hydrogen atoms has a partial positive charge. *** A water molecule is polar with opposite ends of the molecule with opposite charge. - A molecule of water can form 4 hydrogen bond with other molecules of water. - Hydrogen bond are weak bond, compared to the covalent bonds. Therefore, they are easily form and break. 2. Cohesion and adhesion: - Role in the transport of water against the gravity in plants. - The molecules of water adheres to the wall of tree (ADHESION). - Force to stretch or break the surface of a liquid called surface tension is related to COHESION. 3. High specific heat capacity: ***Specific heat = The amount of heat that be absorbed or lost for one gram of a substance to change its temperature by 1 degree Celsius. - Water boils at 100 degree Celsius. - Human body temperature : 37 degree Celsius. - Room temperature : 23 degree Celsius. - Water freezing point : 0 degree Celsius. *** Water stabilize the air temperatures by absorbing the heat and also it can releasing the large amounts of heat with only a slight change in its own temperature. 4. Density is greatest at 4 degree Celsius: - Prevents the water from freezing. - Important in the ice formation on the surface of water where the freezing of the water releases heat to the water. 5. Water is universal solvent: - Ionic compounds dissolve in water become HYDROPHILIC and polar molecules. - HYDROPHOBIC are nonpolar molecules ; covalent compound dissolve in water. |
